Frequently asked questions

Who runs this website?

Help the Hospices , the national charity for the hospice movement, manages this website on behalf of over 200 local hospices that each have their own independent charitable status.

What can I do on the site?

www.lightupalife.org has been created to enable you to easily search for a Light up a Life event taking place in your area and/or light a virtual candle in memory of a loved one

How long will my candle memory last?

All candle memories will stay online from the moment they are lit, until the last day of February. You can light a candle at any time on this website and you can send this candle to friends and family should you wish.

Many hospices invite people to make a dedication to their loved ones in a book of remembrance. Often, names are read aloud, or displayed at the hospice's Light up a Life event. If you would like to ensure your loved one's name is included in the hospice book of remembrance, please contact your local hospice directly.

How can other people view my candle memory?

Simply use the link at the top of the page, entitled ‘Send to a friend’. Alternatively, if friends and family are visiting www.lightupalife.org, they can enter the name of the person being remembered in the search box at the top of the page. They will be able to view what you have written, and also light a candle of their own should they wish to.

How much does lighting a candle cost?

Hospice care is provided free to any one who needs it. But on average, hospices only receive 32% of their funding from the government. Everything else must be generated through fundraising and from the generous support of the public, which is why we ask for your support today.

If you choose to light a candle, there is no minimum donation. We simply request that you consider making a donation to support a hospice of your choice when you light a candle. How much you give is completely up to you.

Can I support a specific hospice?

Yes, you can. There are two ways of doing so on the donation form.

  1. If you know the name of the hospice you’d like to support, there’s a drop-down menu for you to select it from. You may also enter your postcode into the search window, and we’ll let you know the nearest hospice to you.

  2. Alternatively, should you wish to support Help the Hospices, the national charity for the hospice movement, you have the opportunity to do so.

How does my donation make a difference to the hospice I support?

  • £15 could pay for an hour of time from a specialist nurse caring for someone at the end of their life.

  • £35 could pay for an hour of massage therapy for someone attending the day care centre.

  • £50 could provide bereavement counselling for a grieving adult or child.

  • £100 could pay for the entire cost of food in a hospice inpatient ward and day care centre for one day.

  • £125 could cover the cost of one visit from a specialist nurse for those who are being cared for in their own homes

How much of my donation goes to the hospice I choose?

WorldPay, our secure payment partner, deducts the standard credit card transactions from your gift (which typically works out to be 4.5% for credit cards and 50p for debit cards, per transaction). Thereafter your gift is passed directly to the hospice you have chosen to support. There are no administration fees removed by Help the Hospices.

What do you do with my personal details?

Your privacy is of the utmost importance to us. Help the Hospices will securely store your contact details for administration purposes; for example to confirm that your candle memory has been uploaded, or to let you know of any important service changes. We will also pass your details to the hospice you have chosen to support with a gift. This enables them to thank for your donation and to process it legitimately for Gift Aid purposes if you have made a Gift Aid declaration. We will not otherwise share any personal information with third parties. Read more on our Privacy Policy.
